If your tax exempt organization operates in a Fiscal Tax Year, and if your due date falls on Feb 15, 2015, then your due date is extended till Feb 17, 2015 because of the National Holiday (Washington’s Birthday).
In other words...
If your Form 990 (990-EZ, 990-PF, 990-T, etc.) is due on February 15, 2015, then - because of the federal holiday - you have an extra day to file, or e-file an extension.
If you need more time...
You can e-file an extension. Form 8868, Exempt Organizations Tax Extension, can be e-filed through ExpressExtension.com to provide you with an automatic 3 month extension, or 6 months for Form 990-T.
Form 8868 consists of two parts:
Part I: Automatic 3 Month Extension
You do not need to explain why you are requesting an extension for Part I. Once your e-file Form 8868, and it is accepted by the IRS, your deadline to file your tax exempt returns will be automatically extended 3 months.
Part II: Additional (Non-Automatic) 3 Month Extension of Time
You will only e-file Part II if you have previously e-filed Part I, and need an additional 3 months to file.
What You Need To E-file Form 8868
You only need a few essentials to e-file Form 8868 with ExpressExtension.com. You need to have your business/organization name, address, EIN/FEIN, estimated amount of tax owed (if any), and the type of tax form that you normally file your income tax returns on. It is very important to have the exact information the IRS has on file. If you need to check this information, we recommend contacting the IRS Exempt Organizations hotline at 1-877-829-5500.
