Extension Form 8868 | What Exactly Gets Extended?

So, you realize that you need more time to file the return for your tax-exempt organization and you want to go ahead and file for an extension; however, you may not know exactly what this extension grants you. For tax-exempt organizations, an Extension Form 8868 can grant a number of things while, at the same time, there are things it cannot grant.

What An Extension Form 8868 Can Grant: An automatic 3-month time extension or an additional, not-automatic 3-month time extension, if you have already received a previous time extension. These time extensions only extend the time needed for a tax-exempt organization to file their appropriate Form 990, except for a Form 990-N (e-Postcard) in which case an extension cannot be filed.

What An Extension Form 8868 Cannot Grant: An extension of time allowed for a tax-exempt organization to pay any taxes due to the IRS. The amount of unrelated business income of your tax-exempt organization determines if you’re liable to be taxed or not. If you expect your organization’s tax to be $500 or more for the year, then you must pay the estimated tax by its deadline, which cannot be extended even if an Extension Form 8868 has been filed. In this case, you need to call the IRS directly (855.829.550) to inquire about the possibility of extending the time to pay your estimated tax.
By using ExpressExtension, you can quickly and easily extend your filing deadline by electronically filing an Extension Form 8868.

What You’ll Need:
  • Organization/business name
  • Address
  • Employer Identification Number (EIN)
  • Estimated amount of tax owed to the IRS, if any
  • Type of tax form that is normally filed for your return
It’s also important that the information matches exactly what the IRS has on file for your tax-exempt organization. After your extension form has been transmitted to the IRS, you’ll soon receive an e-mail indication of your form being accepted or a reason for rejection. With ExpressExtension, you can always resubmit a rejected return for FREE.

Live professionals are available at our Rock Hill, South Carolina office. Feel free to call (803.514.5155, Monday - Friday, 9am - 6pm EST), e-mail (support@expressextensions.com), or chat with us (www.expressextensions.com) for any further assistance e-filing your Extension Form 8868.

Extension Form 8868 - Part I & Part II

The deadline to file your Form 990 is quickly approaching and you already know that you’re not going to be able to file on time. Without losing your cool, you attempt to file an Extension Form 8868 to receive extra time; however, you realize that there’s a Part I and a Part II of the same form. Which part do you file for your extension?

Part I
Tax exempt organizations such as public charities, churches, private foundations, and other non-profits can file for extensions. The Extension Form 8868 is comprised of two parts. The first part is for an automatic 3-month extension of time; this will automatically extend your filing deadline for three months or six months, if you have to file a Form 990-T. And, there is no need for an explanation requesting your 3-month extension.

Part II
The second part is for an additional, not-automatic 3-month extension; in order to file a Part II, you must have already been granted an automatic 3-month extension from a previously filed Part I. To obtain this additional extension from a Part II, you must provide reasonable cause for requesting additional time. Remember, you cannot file a Part II without filing for a Part I first.

ExpressExtension & Express990
ExpressExtension and Express990 support both parts of the Extension Form 8868 for the current tax year and the most previous tax year only. To successfully file an extension, you should already have your Business/Organization name, address, Employer Identification Number (EIN), an estimated amount of tax owed to the IRS, if any, and the type of tax form normally filed for the organization’s tax returns; and, check carefully that the information matches exactly what the IRS has on record. Even if you’ve filed a Part I elsewhere, you can still file a Part II with our services.

Whether you decide to file on time or not, you must submit either your proper Form 990 or an Extension Form 8868 on the 15th day of the 5th month after your tax period ends; failure to do so may result in penalties. Let ExpressExtension and Express990 ease the stress of tax filing with a safe, secure, and complete submission; and, instant approval of your Form 8868.

DIY | Extending Your Exempt Organization Deadline

The Exempt Organization Income Tax Return Deadline is today and I have a great DIY to extend your deadline using Form 8868 - IRS Exempt Tax Extension. You only need a few bits of information to get started and when you finish you will have an additional 3 months to file. Let's get started!

What You Need
You will need to have your business details, including: your business/organization name, address, EIN/FEIN, tax estimate (if any), and know the type of tax form you are extending the deadline for (990, 990-EZ, etc.).

How To Extend The Deadline Using Form 8868
Head on over to ExpressExtension.com and create an account if you don't have one already. It only takes a second. Then you will choose Form 8868 to e-file and follow the prompts to enter your information. When you reach the end, review your return and make sure the information you entered is correct. Then hit that Transmit button and off the IRS it goes. You will receive instant notification as soon as it is accepted by the IRS (usually within a few minutes).

The really cool feature of Form 8868 is that is has two parts. When you e-file Part I, you will receive an automatic extension of 3 months. Now, sometimes 3 months isn't enough time so you can e-file Part II for an additional 3 months; giving you a total 6 month extension.

What To Do After You Have Extended Your Deadline
Once your deadline is extended, there are a  few more steps you can follow to get a head start your 990 e-filing. Our partners at Express990.com support e-filing of Form 990, 990-EZ, and 990-N (which also includes an e-filing app). Form 990 (the long form) is a new addition for Express990 and it's changing the way tax exempt/nonprofit organizations e-file their taxes with the IRS. Paper filing is really outdated and adds unneeded stress for filer. With Express990.com, e-filing is made simple and there are helpful prompts to guide you from start to finish.

If you have any questions about how to e-file Form 8868, contact the ExpressExtension Support Team via phone: 803-514-5155 or email: support@expressextension.com.

E-file Form 8868 No Matter Where You Are

May 15th is a major IRS deadline for Tax Exempt Organizations that follow a calendar tax year. The 990 form that must be completed and filed by this deadline for those organizations isn't always the easiest task and you may need more time to file. The IRS created Form 8868 to do just that; extend your deadline to allow you more time to prepare your return. Form 8868 can be e-filed in minutes using ExpressExtension.com.

Form 8868
Nonprofit and Exempt Organizations can use IRS Form 8868 to apply for more time to file their exempt organization return. This form is a little unique in that it is divided into two separate parts.

  • Part I: Automatic 3-Month Extension of Time - this is the initial extension where once accepted by the IRS, you will automatically receive an additional 3 months to file. When you need additional time, you will file Part II.
  • Part II: Additional 3-Month Extension of Time - this is the second part of the form that can be filed after Part I when more time is needed to prepare your return. The additional extension is not automatic and is determined by the IRS.
E-filing From Your Mobile Device
ExpressExtension has taken the traditional tax extension paper document and created a condensed series of simple questions for an easy e-file process, making it ideal for using a mobile version. All you need to complete a tax extension is some basic information:
  • Business/Organization name, address, EIN/FEIN
  • Estimated amount of tax owed to the IRS (if any)
  • The type of tax form that you normally file your income tax return on (ex. 990, 990-EZ, 990-T).
Not all locations are computer/laptop friendly, but have no fear, ExpressExtension Mobile is here!

From this mobile site, you can e-file your exempt extension return in minutes and enjoy 3 months of additional time to file. The entire process is pretty quick and if you have the information listed above beforehand, you'll be all set. Contact the ExpressExtension support team if you have any questions about e-filing Form 8868.

E-filing Form 990, 990-EZ, 990-N (e-Postcard)
You don't have paper file your Exempt Income Tax Return anymore. Our partners at Express990.com have worked closely with the IRS to provide you e-filing of
  • Form 990 (available soon)
  • Form 990-EZ
  • Form 990-N
E-filing these forms is a major game changer because it saves you so much time and you don't have to stress about where information goes or if your pen leaks all over the place. Express990 provides guided prompts that take you from start to finish and you can stop at any time and your information will be saved until you return.
