Our hearts go out to all those across the East coast that were recently affected by Hurricane Irene. Fortunately, the IRS will also extend the tax deadline for those with taxes due on September 15th this year to instead be due on September 22nd.

The official rules for the extension to be effective require the taxpayer’s preparer to be located in an area that was either under an order to evacuate or was issued a severe weather warning due to Hurricane Irene.

To view the Official IRS newsletter, see the text below:

WASHINGTON — The Internal Revenue Service today announced it is granting taxpayers whose preparers were affected by Hurricane Irene until Sept. 22 to file returns normally due Sept. 15. The taxpayer’s preparer must be located in an area that was under an evacuation order or a severe weather warning because of Hurricane Irene, even if the preparer is located outside of the federally declared disaster areas.
This relief, which primarily applies to corporations, partnerships and trusts that previously obtained a tax filing extension, is available to taxpayers regardless of their location.
This relief does not apply to any tax payment requirements.

This relief is in addition to the filing and payment relief the IRS is providing to taxpayers located in disaster areas declared by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). For details, visit TaxRelief in Disaster Situations on the IRS website,www.irs.gov.

A Record Number of E-Filings

As of Right Now (April 18, 2011) there have already been over 100 Million people who have E-Filed their Tax Returns with the IRS this year!  That is already an 8.8 percent increase from last year.  Such a sharp increase could perhaps be because this is an odd tax year.  Instead of taxes coming due on the traditional April 15th Deadline, taxpayers had until Monday April 18th this year.  This delay is because Friday, April 15th was Emancipation Day, which is a Washington DC holiday.  This gave taxpayers an extra 3 days to file their tax returns.  The IRS E-File program began in 1990 and has steadily increased in popularity.  There have nearly been one billion tax returns filed since its beginning.  It is important for taxpayers to also know that it is not too late to file for a tax extension.  You can file a Personal tax extension by filing a Form 4868 which is an “Application for Automatic Extension of Time to File US Individual Income Tax Return.”  This form allows taxpayers to delay their tax deadline to October.

NonProfit organizations can also file a tax extension by filing Form 8868.  These forms are different because it consists of two parts: an automatic 3 month extension, and a non-automatic additional 3 month extension.  These must be filed separately if one wants to use them both.

Taxpayers can also file these E-File these forms from the comfort of their own home or office!  An excellent tax preparation software program for Tax Extensions is ExpressExtension.com.  The process only takes about 10 minutes and in the end, you receive an email confirmation once the extension is processed by the IRS.
