IRS Rejection? Have You Heard of the Perfection Period?
Congratulations, you filed your extension on time with the IRS…however your form has been rejected. Don’t panic, this doesn’t mean that you have lost your chance at an extension. This is where the perfection period comes in.
What is the perfection period?
Think of the perfection period as a grace period. This is the 10-day window from the time of the form’s original deadline, in which the IRS allows you to make corrections to your rejected tax return and re-transmit it.
It is important to understand that this period of time is not an extension of time to file.
For example, you can’t file a tax return 5 days late and claim that it is on time because of the perfection period. That won’t fly with the IRS, late is late.
How does the perfection period apply to IRS Tax Extensions?
For those of you who filed your extension Form 7004, 4868, or 8868 yesterday and received an IRS rejection, you’re in luck. The perfection period for tax extensions is 5 business days, the IRS provides you with this time to fix the errors that caused your rejection.
