Nonprofit February Deadline Extension

Today is George Washington's Birthday, aka - President's Day! You might not think there is too much to celebrate on this chilly day in February, but you would most certainly be mistaken. This fun holiday to remember one of our founding fathers is also a federal holiday which means:

If your tax exempt organization operates in a Fiscal Tax Year, and if your due date falls on Feb 15, 2015, then your due date is extended till Feb 17, 2015 because of the National Holiday (Washington’s Birthday).

In other words...
If your Form 990 (990-EZ, 990-PF, 990-T, etc.) is due on February 15, 2015, then - because of the federal holiday - you have an extra day to file, or e-file an extension.

If you need more time...
You can e-file an extension. Form 8868, Exempt Organizations Tax Extension, can be e-filed through to provide you with an automatic 3 month extension, or 6 months for Form 990-T. 

Form 8868 consists of two parts:
Part I: Automatic 3 Month Extension
You do not need to explain why you are requesting an extension for Part I. Once your e-file Form 8868, and it is accepted by the IRS, your deadline to file your tax exempt returns will be automatically extended 3 months. 

Part II: Additional (Non-Automatic) 3 Month Extension of Time
