There are some IRS deadlines today - here's what you need to know if you have one!

Today, June 17, 2024, marks a crucial deadline for various types of filers, including foreign corporations, taxpayers outside the U.S., and nonprofits. It’s important to determine if you fall into one of these categories and need to meet this deadline.

If you need extra filing time, you can rely on ExpressExtension! In just a few steps, you can complete and file your extension and avoid the rush of filing your return today.

Let’s take a closer look at the forms that are part of today’s deadline and who they apply to.

Which Forms Are Due Today?

Today marks the deadline for the following tax returns.

Business Tax Returns

This deadline applies specifically for Form 1120-F (U.S. Income Tax Return of a Foreign Corporation) if you are an individual or entity without an office or business location within the United States of America. Generally, you are required to submit this form by the 15th day of the 6th month following the end of your tax year.

You have the option to extend your filing deadline by 6 months through submission of Form 7004 (the Application for Automatic Extension of Time To File Certain Business Income Tax, Information, and Other Returns).

Individual Tax Returns

This deadline is also applicable for individual tax return filers under certain conditions:

  • Form 1040-NR Filers — if you did not receive wages as an employee subject to U.S. income tax withholding.
  • Outside the U.S. — If you were outside of the United States on the original deadline for Form 1040 (April 15, 2024) and obtained a two-month automatic extension.

Taxpayers who meet either of these criteria likely have a deadline for their 2023 tax year return today.

Individuals needing further time to file Form 1040-NR can extend the deadline by submitting the extension Form 4868 (the Application for Automatic Extension of Time to File U.S. Individual Income Tax Return).

Nonprofit Tax Returns

If you are a nonprofit organization with a fiscal tax year that ended in January 2024, you are required to file 990 forms by the end of the day. There are five different 990 forms, all sharing today’s deadline:

  • 990-N (E-postcard) – For organizations with gross receipts of $50,000 or less.
  • 990-EZ (Short Form Return of Organization Exempt from Income Tax) – For organizations with gross receipts < $200,000 and assets < $500,000.
  • 990 (Return of Organization Exempt from Income Tax) –  For organizations with gross receipts of $200,000 or more (or) assets of $500,000 or more.
  • 990-PF (Return of Private Foundation) – For organizations classified as Private Foundations.
  • 990-T (Exempt Organization Business Income Tax Return ) –  For organizations with unrelated business income of $1000 or more.

You can acquire an extension of up to 6 months by filing Form 8868 (Application for Extension of Time to File an Exempt Organization Return).

Note: Since June 15 fell over the weekend, the deadline has moved to the next business day, today, June 17.
