DIY | Extending Your Exempt Organization Deadline

The Exempt Organization Income Tax Return Deadline is today and I have a great DIY to extend your deadline using Form 8868 – IRS Exempt Tax Extension. You only need a few bits of information to get started and when you finish you will have an additional 3 months to file. Let’s get started!

What You Need
You will need to have your business details, including: your business/organization name, address, EIN/FEIN, tax estimate (if any), and know the type of tax form you are extending the deadline for (990, 990-EZ, etc.).

How To Extend The Deadline Using Form 8868
Head on over to ExpressExtension.com and create an account if you don’t have one already. It only takes a second. Then you will choose Form 8868 to e-file and follow the prompts to enter your information. When you reach the end, review your return and make sure the information you entered is correct. Then hit that Transmit button and off the IRS it goes. You will receive instant notification as soon as it is accepted by the IRS (usually within a few minutes).

The really cool feature of Form 8868 is that is has two parts. When you e-file Part I, you will receive an automatic extension of 3 months. Now, sometimes 3 months isn’t enough time so you can e-file Part II for an additional 3 months; giving you a total 6 month extension.

What To Do After You Have Extended Your Deadline
Once your deadline is extended, there are a  few more steps you can follow to get a head start your 990 e-filing. Our partners at Express990.com support e-filing of Form 990, 990-EZ, and 990-N (which also includes an e-filing app). Form 990 (the long form) is a new addition for Express990 and it’s changing the way tax exempt/nonprofit organizations e-file their taxes with the IRS. Paper filing is really outdated and adds unneeded stress for filer. With Express990.com, e-filing is made simple and there are helpful prompts to guide you from start to finish.
