Introducing IRS Extension Form 8868
You’re probably relaxing because you survived the Personal Income Tax deadline recently. We’re proud of you for either filing your return or filing an extension by the deadline in order to avoid getting hit with IRS penalties and fees.
However, even though you just survived that major tax deadline, tax season is still in full swing. The Information Returns deadline for nonprofits is due by May 15th! So, what do you do if your organization isn’t ready to file?! The solution is easy, head to ExpressExtension to e-file Form 8809.
Information Returns Extension Form 8868
Every year nonprofit organizations or tax-exempt groups like charities, educational groups, groups against child cruelty, and more are required to file an Information Returns Form 990 in order to make their financial information available to the public and to show the IRS that they aren’t taking advantage of their tax exempt status.
So, no big deal right? File your Form 990 to keep the IRS off your back. But what happens when you aren’t ready to file? You can’t file late or you’ll get hit with penalties and fees! Don’t worry, you can get more time to file with IRS Form 8868.
Information Returns Extension Form 8868 is the form used by nonprofits, charities, and other tax-exempt groups to get an automatic 6-month extension to file their information returns. Imagine what you could do with 6 extra months to file.
Because IRS Form 8868 is automatic, you don’t need to provide the IRS with a valid reason for needing an extension or a signature. All you have to do is spend a few minutes e-filing Form 8869 by the May 15th deadline.
The process is incredibly simple, all you need is your organization’s name, address, EIN/Tax-ID, tax year period, and which 990 you typically file. Now it is important to make sure this information matches what the IRS has on file. You can verify your information with the IRS by calling them directly at 1-877-829-5500.
There are only a few things to keep in mind about Extension Form 8868. For example, IRS Form 8868 can’t be used to extend the due date for Form 990-N (e-Postcard). Also, IRS Form 8870 can’t be e-filed with Part I or Part II, but we can generate Form 8870 in your account for you to print, fill out, and mail.
