If you need more time to file, don’t worry, simply head to ExpressExtension to e-file extension Form 8868!
Extension Form 8868
Every year nonprofit organizations must file a Return of Organization Exempt From Income Tax Form or a Form 990 from the IRS. This form is used to prevent organizations from taking advantage of their tax-exempt status and to provide the public with financial information about nonprofit organizations.
If the organization needs more time to file their return for whatever reason because they need a little extra time to file, they can easily get the time they need with Exempt Organization Form 8868.
IRS Form 8868 is the tax extension form used by nonprofits charities, and other tax-exempt groups to apply for an automatic 6-month extension to file their returns. Because this extension is automatic all you have to do is e-file it and transmit it to the IRS by the May 15th deadline to get your extension approved almost instantly.
There used to be an automatic 3-month extension and then a nonautomatic 3-month extension that you could take advantage of, but the IRS combined them to create one automatic 6-month extension.
There are a few important things to remember: IRS Form 8868 cannot be used to extend the due date of Form 990-N (e-Postcard.) Also, IRS Form 8879 can not be e-filed with either Part 1 or Part 2, but we can generate Form 8870 in your account for you to print, fill out, and send by mail.
The e-filing process is actually quick and simple. It only takes a few minutes to gain an extra 6-months to file your return. All you have to do is create your free ExpressExtension account and click “Create Exempt Org Tax Extension” from the dashboard.
Then our step-by-step guide will help you correctly fill out your form in a matter of minutes. The only information you’ll need to provide is your organization’s name, address, EIN/Tax-ID, tax year period, and which 990 Form you usually file.
A summary of your information will be displayed so you can catch and correct any mistakes. Then we will perform an audit check to catch any errors. Click back to edit your information. Last but not least, pay for your form and transmit it to the IRS.
Unlike other services, ExpressExtension keeps you informed every step of the way with live status updates. Check your dashboard to see when the IRS receives your form and when your form is accepted. You’ll also be notified via email once your extension has been approved.
